Storm Irene Rains Collapse . . .

Northern most span of Loon "International Bridge" collapsed by storm Irene !

The morning after hurricane Irene struck New England hard with little wind, but approximately 14 inches of rain at the rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, the flow rate of the waters in the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River undermined the northern most abutment of Loon's International Bridge resulting in the collapse of the northern most of the three spans.   A temporary pedestrian bridge was utilized to provide pedestrian traffic to and from the Highland Games on September 16th thru the 19th.   Upon completion of the Highland Games the pedestrian bridge was removed.  Presently the Bridge is closed to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic while work is proceeding on removing the collapsed section of the Bridge.   The plan remains to temporarily install a two lane Bailey bridge capable of supporting vehicular traffic by Thanksgiving which will be used throughout the 2011-2012 Ski Season.   Then in April 2012, after the Ski Season has ended, complete repairs to the International Bridge.e.
