Flying Fifties Ladies . . .
                 Conquer The Italian Alps !

So be honest now, what did you do this summer to stay physically fit and in good shape for the 2011-2012 ski season?  Well these Flying Fifties Ladies decided to take on a very impressive challenge.  Toni, Pat, Ruth and Joan decided to show the Italian Alps (and those in Austria and Slovenia as well) who's the most fit.  We can't wait to hear about their exploits when we see them this winter on the slopes at Loon.  Looks like they'll have some great stories to fill us in on!  We're impressed . . . Great job Ladies !

Flying Fifties Motto:

Our intention in the Journey of Life is not to arrive safely and well preserved
but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out,
and loudly proclaiming
"Wow - What a Ride !"

Fri, Jan 27th . . . Change in Location of Après Ski !

Flying Fifties Members:

Our Après ski this Friday, Jan 27, at 2:00PM has been moved from Truants to CJ’s (Brittany’s).  CJ’s is located on the main street in Lincoln, on the corner at the intersection where the Common Man is located.  Coming from the mountain, take the right hand turn where the Common Man is located, and CJ/Brittany’s parking area is immediately on the left.  The entrance is near the center of the building, and we will be using the dinning room upstairs directly across from the entrance.  The manager of CJ’s is excited to be hosting our group, so lets come and enjoy this new venue.

On Thursday this week (Jan 26), we will be having the opportunity to ski at 8AM from the Gondola.  This gives us a full hour of skiing on groomed slopes before the lifts open to the general public.  We will then be having our regular start from Camp III at 10:00.

To take advantage of the 8AM start, we will meet on the snow outside of the Gondola, just under where the Gondola cars enter/exit the building on the cables.  This is near the First Aid entrance where there is a ramp up into the Gondola building.  Flying Fifties members are only allowed to ride the Gondola with a group with an instructor, and we will begin promptly at 8:00.  If you miss this start time, please wait for one of the coaches to bring a group back down for a second run, and enter with that instructor.  Please do not ask to go up on your own.  We will use only trails approved for safe use at that time by Ski Patrol, so please ski with one of the coaches.

I’m looking forward to a great week, and I hope to see everybody Thursday at 8AM.

Lincoln Public Library . . . Named 5 Star For 3rd Straight Year !

A recent survey by Library Journal magazine names the Lincoln Public Library as one of the best public libraries in the state.   The survey ranked libraries based on outputs such as circulation and program attendance, assigning Michelin Guide-like ratings or five, four or three stars.  Out of 7,513 public libraries surveyed, 262 receive star ratings.

The Lincoln Public Library received five stars.     “We are very proud of our library and the service that it provides the community,” said Library Director Carol Riley.  “We try to respond to our particular community, and the community in turn uses the library.”

“We have a very engaging staff that pays attention and welcomes every person who comes into the library,” she said.

She’s confident that the townspeople will continue to support the library, both by their use of the facility and financially.  Membership in the Friends of the Lincoln Library is up,  and the annual membership drive surpassed  its goal, and now have over 187 members.

The Library Journal Index of Public Library Service, which was the magazine’s November  issue cover story, measured four outputs --- circulation per capita, visits per capita, program attendance per capita, and public Internet use per capita --- based on 2009 data collected by the Institute of Museum and Library Science

Some Energy Facts For The Winter !

1. Here are some useful facts to keep in mind:
The amount of heat contained in a gallon of #2 fuel oil is 139,000 BTU.
The amount of heat contained in a gallon of kerosene is 134,000 BTU.
The amount of heat contained in a gallon of propane is 91,600 BTU.
The amount of heat contained in a kilowatt-hour of electricity is 3,413 BTU.

2. To compare the cost of heat from a gallon of fuel oil verses a gallon of propane you need to multiply the cost of the propane by 139,000/91,600 or 1.52.

3. To compare the cost of heat from a gallon of fuel oil verses electricity you need to divide the BTU's contained in a gallon of fuel oil by the BTU's contained in a kilowatt hour of electricity then multiply by the cost of a kilowatt hour of electricity, e.g. 143,000 / 3,413 X $0.18755 or $7.86 !  (NHEC price used.) Would you still like to have an electric car?

4. Check out "heating degree day" data from NOAA to estimate how much fuel you should have burned year over year by clicking here.

5. Check out current oil prices of 12 different suppliers in Northern New England by clicking here.
